The Impact of Tourism on Employment

That tourism sector is a labour intensive sector and it’s constitutional features, lead to that it’s different from other sectors. In tourism sector, mechanization and automation is pretty limited except for some usage of computer systems. That’s why when tourism, as the labour intensive production is dominating the sector, creates direct employment effect at high rate, also creates employment effect by providing employment opportunity to other supplier and panderer side sectors. In an economy, diversity and integration is a factor that increases the number of created indirect employment. 34
There are three kind of employment, in a country economy and tourism sector. These are:
1. The direct employment, due to the tourist expense in facilities likewise hotel, motel, restaurant which included in the tourism sector,
2. The indirect employment, that arise in other sectors, which add inputs to the sector, take part in the supply section of the tourism sector, but not ensue by the touristic expenses,
3. The supplementary employment or stimulated employment that arise through the expense of the gained income by the local community and in some sort by the effects of tourism multiplier.

The employment effect of the tourism expenses, is up to the density of toursim demand. In other words, the more touristic demand to a country or a region increases, the more the direct or indirect employment effect of tourism in that country or region will be. In short, the increase of employment shows paralleism with supply increase. To supply the increase in tourism supply, is possible by increase of the touristic facility investments. As the touristic facility investments increase the labor demand, the labor demand of the touristic facilities will increase in dense seasons due to the feature of supply’s seasonal fluctuation. Despite the labor power decreases in off season, still there will be a permanency. 37
It’s possible to sort the major results of employment in tourism sector:
* The seasonality feature of tourism, increasing the number of employed staff in dense season, is a positive contribution in terms of national economy, but the unemployment of the staff in off season which employed in the season, will create a full employment surplus in the economy. To subdue this negative effect of tourism, the employment of student or leisured people in tourism season, is seen as a solution.
* Establishments like hotel, motel, which have the greatest business opportunities in tourism sector, are corporations, need big investments. However, side facilities which need less start-up cost don’t need big investments. This is an intimidating situation for entrepreneurs. The state should reinforce this sector in order to create new more area of employment in tourism sector.

The Impact of Tourism on Infrastructure

In order to be opened to tourism of a country or a region, its infrastructure, transportation and local services should have been completed. Especially in developing countries, the development of tourims shows parallelism with the development of infrastructure. Economically, infrastructure operations are nonvisual services as well as they’re performed by public sector in order to both development of economy and public’s benefit. Usually its accepted as a principle that infrastructure is performed by public and superstructure is by private sector. 48
The infrastructure utilities that act an important part in development of tourism and also intended to supply with local community, with their relation with tourism can be sort as following:
1. Energy Resources: One of the primarily set infrasructure systems that should be in a touristic region.
2. Water: One of the other important elemnt of infrastructure. If its considered that the daily water consumption of tourist is minimum 250 lt. the importance of the possibility of water and the water distribution system in the touristic region can be understood.
3. Transportation: Is one of the most important element of the touristic product. No matter how a region is convenient in touristic perspective, if its transportation utilities are insufficient its to hard the development of tourism in this region.

Due to its dependance to so many industry sectors, the tourism sector is a sector that creates energiser and gripping effects, should it be developed. Depending on the qualification and size of the tourism demand, putting new and various infrastructure investments, building-up existing ones, increasing the agricultural and industrial production, recovering communication and transportation systems, efficiency gaining of the trade and service businesses, are expected developments depending on the development of tourism.
In Turkey, infrastructure and urbanization are important issues. Electricity, route, water, deficiency of drain, corrosion and pollution of natural habitat, breed of the slums, water and air pollution, traffic, cleanliness problem are preventing the development of tourism services. The solution of al this problems is; depending on fulfilling an integrated, long tourism planning which protects environment and natural balance, prevents concretion, completes the infrastructure and takes the nation’s local, cultural, social etc. aspects together.
urkish tourism has different problems. If we take glance to these; today in Turkish tourism, it is obvious that especially marketing, promotion, presentation problems are primarily problms. Primarily, Turkey should make the tourism presentation a current issue in macro level. The image represents Turkey should be developed properly and then must be determined what kind of a customer profile that it suits and the identification of the service should be defined properly. To this service, a proper systems configuration should be well organised, a coordination shoul be set-up between public and private sector, required financial arrangement should be well determined, national and international instruments which take part in presentation and presentation organisations should be well chosen.
